INTERCELTIQUE FESTIVAL LORIENT

Written by david kemp. Posted in The Blog

The Interceltique Festival,
a celebration of celtic culture, music dance ,drama&  art from eight participating nations, Astoria, Arcadia,Cornwall,Galicia, Scotland, Ireland , Wales, & the Isle of Man,will be held in LORIENT Brittany ,early this August.

The festival will include an International  Exhibition of the Visual Arts,at the Hotel Gabriel, Lorient from August 2nd until the 11th.

I am very pleased to have been invited to represent CORNWALL this year.
I have lived  & worked in West Cornwall for nearly four decades,& many of my sculptures have been assembled from recycled & discarded materials  collected locally. I hope that they may reflect some aspects of the changes in our region, over recent years?

Cornwall, like most Celtic nations , is a maritime region, & suffers marine pollution.
I am planning to exhibit a group of “RELEASED SPIRITS”made from plastic containers, found washed up on our winter beaches.
Perhaps more frightening than these grotesque masks, are the toxins  they once contained,
as the huge fatalities amoungs our sea birds last winter has shown?

Also travelling to France, are the original “HOUNDS OF GEEVOR”,apack of dogs made from  obsolete work boots, discarded when the last TIN mines in the county were closed several years ago.
Cornwall County Council has since commissioned the Hounds to be cast in Bronze (which is tin & copper), & sited publically in FORE STREET REDRUTH, once the capital of Cornish Tin mining.(see my previous BLOG “TINNERS HOUNDS” for more details.)

The hounds of Geevor(above)
will be accompanied by a pack of more recent “WELL HEELED BITCHES”.
These  elegant  dogs are seen more frequently in the county, & may well be the favourite pets of secound home owners wives?
