barque of the lost daze

Written by David Kemp. Posted in The Blog

This winter ,I avoided the cold weather, cold and damp of my workshop and worked instead from the warmth and shelter of my garden room.
Limited space has meant that I have had to work on a small scale, but I have been constructing more sculptures  from  similar objects rescued from the rapidly accumulating pile of redundant domestic electrical components that clutter our  lives.

The barque of the lost daze

The so called “digital age” of “smart devices” designed to assist our lives ,

also seems increasingly to order and even control  us?

There are clever machines for every task ,answers for  every question, instant information  for all enquiries.

Information  however,is not necessarily knowledge,  and I.T  does not supply  wisdom.

Traditional beliefs and philosophies are falling like dominoes ,succumbing to the  “authority” of  artificial intelligence,

misinformation and “fake news” Belief systems, consumerism  politics ,democracy ,and faiths  are being  overtaken  by  the

omnipotent ,but very convenient machines, that some fear  may soon render  humans  redundant ?

back at work

Written by David Kemp. Posted in The Blog

I am back at work making small scale sculptures and painting pictures again,

Soon I will be updating this blog with news of my recent  projects.

I am sorry for my recent long   absence, this is due entirely to health reasons, but hopefully, I have found some new ways of working which will circumnavigate  these problems.

In the meantime, here are a few recent smaller sculptures.

the Wastelands, sketchbook,Sheffield 1988

At junction 34,the motorway,a blue snake, loops east of Sheffield.

It was autumn in the valley of the Don,and the bricks were falling like leaves.

In the desolation that was Attercliffe, only the walls of gutted factories were left standing, enclosing empty lots.

Scrapyards overflowed, untidy metal nests, wedged between junctions, under railway arches, and overhanging canals.

Returning to Sheffield, old iron and steel is trundled, rumbled, grabbed and and humbled,on its way to a new incarnation.

In Grimesthorpe and Brightside, from Bessamer to Cyclops road ,past Vulcan works and out to Carsbrook, lone buildings tremble as the demolition machines crunch caterpillar closer.

The brick strewn plains, and dead cats in sacks lands of Attercliffe, await regeneration.

HEAVY PLANT Sheffield

Written by David Kemp. Posted in The Blog

heavy plant 1

I built the Heavy Plant in 1988, in the courtyard of  of the recently opened SHEFFIELD SCIENCE PARK , from the detritus of Sheffield’s  once huge steel industries, discovered in scrapyards and demolished buildings,in and around the city.

Now,26 years later, the clever earth(steel) from which the piece was made is rusting away , and the sculpture finds itself(again), in the way of new developments .

A campaign has been started in Sheffield to re site the sculpture,
